The Biligirirangana Hills, commonly called BR Hills, is a hill range situated in south-eastern Karnataka, at its border with Tamil Nadu (Erode District) in South India. The area is called Biligiriranganatha Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary or simply BRT Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a protected reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Being at the confluence of the Western Ghat and the Eastern Ghats, the sanctuary is home to eco-systems that are unique to both the mountain ranges. The site was declared a tiger reserve in January 2011 by the Karnataka government, a few months after approval from India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority.

While on a trip to BR Hills, travellers must visit Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple that lies on the top of the hill range. The Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Venkatesha. Out of all the temples in India devoted to Lord Ranganatha, this is the only pilgrimage site where the idol of the deity is in standing position.

The Chamundeshwari Temple is located on the top of Chamundi Hills about 13 km from the palace city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka in India. The temple was named after Chamundeshwari or Durga, the fierce form of Shakti, a tutelary deity held in reverence for centuries by Mysore Maharajas. The original shrine is thought to have been built in the 12th century by Hoysala rulers while its tower was probably built by the Vijayanagar rulers of the 17th century. In 1659, a flight of one thousand steps was built leading up to the 3000 foot summit of the hill.

At the temple are several images of Nandi (the bull mount of Shiva). There is a huge granite Nandi on the 800th step on the hill in front of a small Shiva temple a short distance away. This Nandi is over 15 feet high, and 24 feet long and around its neck are exquisite bells. The temple has a seven story tall ‘Gopura’ decorated with intricate carvings. The deity of the goddess is said to be made of gold and the temple doors of silver.

Jwalamukhi Tripura Sundari Temple is ancient temple of Jwalamukhi Tripurasundari is built in Uthanahalli, Mysore at the foot of Chamundi Hills. She is believed to be the sister of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the presiding deity of Chamundi hills temple. Jwalamukhi Tripura Sundari temple is approximately 7 kilometers from the center of Mysore and is 3 kms from Chamundeshwari temple atop the hills. Jwalamukhi means a person with energy of fire and some believe that she represents the flaming mouth of Jalandhara, the demon whom Lord Shiva crushed to death using huge masses of mountains. Tripura Sundari means beauty of the three worlds.
